Can I surf in lockdown?

Yes, surfing is allowed this time around, but have a look at the details to see what’s best for you.

We have been encouraged to get outdoors during this second lockdown, with no limit on the time we can spend exercising outdoors. We can use certain outdoor spaces such as parks, beaches, and the countryside to our hearts’ content.

In the first lockdown of the year, the RNLI asked people not to surf and other surf organisations discouraged people from surfing, but this time around we haven’t been asked to stay out of the water.

Although the national governing body for surfing Surfing England asks people to surf within their limits and to be aware of their surroundings at this time:

‘If in doubt, don’t paddle out. Be honest with yourself about your capabilities to stay safe in the water. Many beaches do not have RNLI Lifeguards in Operation. Visit www.rnli.org for information.

Be mindful that there are elderly/vulnerable people that may still be self-isolating. Consider the local facilities (supermarkets, cafes/restaurants, toilets, parking, etc) and provision of emergency services when making your plans to surf.’

Can I travel to surf?

Government guidance is of course vague but says: ‘You should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. However, you can and should still travel to spend time or exercise outdoors – this should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel to do so if necessary, for example, to access an open space.’

Surf schools will be closed in lockdown but one-to-one surf coaching continues and surf therapy programmes like the amazing The Wave Project will continue to run to help groups such as vulnerable young people.

If you can’t get to the beach at the moment have a go at some surf workouts to get you ready for your next session. Or join one of our online yoga classes to keep you calm and energised at home.

For anyone simply struggling with mental wellbeing, read the NHS website for tips on keeping balanced while staying at home.
